May 2008 news round-up

Who's Doing What For HABB?
BLACK TIE AWARDS NIGH
J&E Training is a regular fundraiser for HABB and the company's latest even will be a black tie awards night at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon, Essex, on Monday 16 June. Local salons will be showcasing their collections as part of the evening. The winners of the competitions will be announced together with six achievement awards, including the highly coveted Student of the Year 2008 accolade. The night will also include a prize draw with all proceeds donated to HABB. Tickets are available from J&E Training on 01268 286403.

HABB SEMINARS: BEVERLY C
There are a few remaining tickets available to see the hugely talented Beverly C, on Monday 9 June. Said Beverly: "My HABB seminar is basically a depiction of who I am shown through my work over the years: an up-close-and-personal event. There will be model demonstrations of a huge cross-section of my work, from consumer looks, to long hair and avant garde. The seminar will be a chance to get to know me as a person as well as a hairdresser, and I hope it will be an inspirational journey for everyone."

Beverly C has also donated a prize for the night - a chance to win her DVD collection plus a ticket to attend 'An Audience with Beverly C' at the Goldwell Academy in November.
Tickets cost £35 and can be booked by calling HABB on 01372 849639. Tickets for Bruce Masefield and The Sassoon Creative Team (2 July) and Patrick Cameron (9 July) are also on general sale.

SHAKIRA GETS ON HER BIKE
Shakira has been a beneficiary of HABB since 1999. She is disabled with cerebral palsy, which affects her mobility, making it hard for her to get about. Her mother, Michelle Robinson, worked as a hairdresser for 14 years and is a single mother. HABB bought Shakira a tricycle in 1999 to help with her mobility and then paid for adjustments in 2006. Earlier this year, when Shakira turned 11, her mother wrote to ask if HABB would be able to help with a quad bike as Shakira had grown too big for the trike. The committee agreed to buy Shakira the quad bike so that she can continue to be as mobile as the tricycle enabled her.

HABB BUSINESS TIP
HABB's fundraising member and industry business guru, Helien Ward, has shard a great business tip to raise funds for HABB. "An easy way to contribute to HABB and boost your business is to instigate a cancellation charge policy in your salons. Simply inform your clients of the new policy and tell them that you will donate either the entire, or a percentage of the cancellation fee, to HABB. Not only are you helping your industry's charity but also creating a professional ethic among your clients that should boost business."

HABB Day round-up
The second annual HABB Day showed what a caring and sharing industry the hair and beauty are, as an impressive £2,500 was raised on Friday 2nd May 2008.

Unlike the more established national charity days and month's, HABB is only in its early stages and is very much promoted by word of mouth and a trade campaign amongst salons and companies familiar with the good work HABB does. It's an aim of Fundraising Committee to continue shouting about this day, year on year, and hope that it quickly becomes a regular date in our industries diary.

HABB received support from a number of companies, each doing their own thing on the day to raise funds and awareness.

  • A hugely impressive £1,065 was donated by Sharon Malcolm following a mini-marathon sponsorship, collection jar on the reception and donations from her team.
  • The team at Guy Kremer donated their tips for the day to raise £25.
  • HABIA staff dressed up as cowboys on the day and raised over £230.
  • J&E Training collected donations from the team and hosted a student hair cut day to raise £170.
  • The team at Jo Hansford hosted a dress down day and charged their team a fee to participate and raised £50.
  • The administration team for seanhanna donated £45 on the day.
  • Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa donated £100 from their dress down day and selling demo products to their team.
  • hob salons directors donated £100 on the day.
  • The team at Schwarkopf donated £500 on the day.
  • The Southsea based Rae Palmer team held a Mufty day to raise £100.

A huge thanks from HABB goes out to all the companies who donated money on HABB Day.
